Traditions

La serenata

It is a charming pre-wedding tradition where the groom, accompanied by friends and neighbours, gathers outside the bride’s home to serenade her. What starts as a romantic gesture often turns into a small celebration, with laughter, music, and sometimes even dancing, as everyone joins in to celebrate the couple before the big day

I confetti

Sugared almonds in a variety of colours, often handed out to guests. They are meant to symbolize wishes of health, happiness, wealth, fertility, and long life. They are used in all major celebrations: weddings, births, baptisms, graduations, etc.

Le bomboniere

At the reception, guests are often given small gifts called “bomboniera”, which are typically boxes filled with confetti or small keepsakes to thank them for their attendance.

Regione Campania

What to visit and do in the area

If you wish to prolong your stay in Italy, here are some tips about what to visit and do in the area that we put together for you.

Serena’s area

Cerreto Sannita

It is Serena’s hometown. It is a village in the province of Benevento, Campania, known for its picturesque setting in the foothills of the Matese Mountains. The town’s layout features a grid pattern, which was a deliberate design to aid its reconstruction after a major earthquake in 1688. The town is renowned for its ceramics, especially its traditional pottery, which is a significant part of its cultural heritage.

Guardia Sanframondi

It is a historic village in the province of Benevento, Campania, nestled in the rolling hills of the Sannio region. It’s known for its medieval Castle and historic center. The town is famous for the “Riti Settennali di Penitenza in onore della Vergine Assunta”, a deeply rooted religious event that takes place every seven years.
Guardia Sanframondi is also renowned for its oil and wine production - among the local wines there are Aglianico and Falanghina (ask Serena for tips!).

Caserta

What to see

Reggia di Caserta (Royal Palace of Caserta and gardens) - This UNESCO World Heritage site is undoubtedly the most famous attraction in Caserta. The palace was built in the 18th century for the Bourbon kings of Naples and is often compared to Versailles in terms of its grandeur. You can explore its magnificent interiors, which include ornate rooms, frescoed ceilings, and impressive halls. The palace also boasts stunning gardens, complete with fountains, sculptures, and a vast park that extends for kilometers—ideal for a leisurely stroll or picnic.

Where to eat

  • I masanielli - 2nd best pizza according to 50 best. It needs to be booked really in advance
  • Pepe in grani - fine dining pizza in the historical center of Caiazzo, 29th best pizza according to 50 best. It needs to be booked really in advance

Napoli

Check this map for things to see, do and where to eat.
Sightseeing points that are inside Napoli are in green; restaurants and places where to eat are marked in red; Sightseeing places outside Napoli are in blue.

Tips and Favourites

- Pizza: 50 Kalò (7th best pizza according to 50 best and our personal favourite) - they don’t take reservation so we suggest to go outside Italian lunch/dinner times
- Coffee and sfogliatella (or other pastries): Gambrinus - if you have time, ask to sit inside there is a beautiful room
- Sightseeing:
- Check out the inside of Chiostro di Santa Chiara
- You can find a Caravaggio painting in the Pio Monte della Misericordia church. The work is The Seven Works of Mercy.
- Check out Museo Cappella Sansevero - it is a stunning 18th-century chapel known for its extraordinary Baroque art and sculptures, including the famous Veiled Christ by Giuseppe Sanmartino. It blends religious, artistic, and mystical themes, offering a rich cultural and historical experience.

Pompei

Pompei is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world, offering a unique and captivating glimpse into ancient Roman life. The city was famously buried under volcanic ash after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, preserving it almost perfectly for centuries. When excavations began in the 18th century, the preserved ruins revealed incredible details about daily life in a Roman city.

Pompeii is big so the amount of time you need to visit it depends on your interests, energy levels, and how much detail you want to explore. A standard visit is about 4-5 hours and we recommend having a guide.

Sorrento

What to see

  • Marina Piccola
  • Marina Grande
  • Villa comunale e giardini
  • Piazza Tasso
  • Chiostro di San Francesco

Where to eat

Tips and Favourites

  • Visit “i Bagni della Regina Giovanna”, an ancient Roman villa with a natural swimming pool carved into the rocks, located just outside the town center. The ruins of the Roman villa are set in a stunning natural location, and the crystal-clear waters make it a great spot for swimming or just relaxing by the sea.

  • Lemons from Sorrento are really famous and delicious. If you drink alcohol, try Limoncello and Limoncello Spritz. If you don’t ask for a fresh lemonade with Sorrento Lemons - you will taste the difference. Our favourite Limoncello is the one from “Giardini di Cataldo”. If you want to taste their limoncello and other liquors under lemon trees and/or buy some to take home, go and visit “Giardini di Cataldo e Limonaia”.
Our favourite Limoncello Spritz was “Da Giniello” - a very (very) small and relaxed place, with a nice view of the sea and the Marina Grande.

  • The Grand Hotel Excelsior Victoria in Sorrento is a luxurious 5-star hotel with a stunning location overlooking the Bay of Naples. It is a very pricey hotel of course, but the building and the panoramic views of the coastline and Mount Vesuvius are gorgeous. The view is visible from the Hotel bar, which is open to everyone (not only hotel guests).

La Costiera Amalfitana

What to see

Positano

Famous for its colorful cliffside buildings, narrow streets, and chic boutiques. Don’t miss the beach and the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.
Hotel Poseidon has a nice terrace restaurant with outside tables and a scenic view.

Amalfi

Known for the magnificent Amalfi Cathedral (Duomo di Amalfi) and its charming piazzas. The Paper Museum (Museo della Carta) is also worth a visit.

Ravello

A hilltop gem with breathtaking views (Serena’s favourite place in the Amalfi Coast). We highly recommend checking out Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone, both with beautiful gardens and panoramic vistas.

Villa Rufolo in Ravello is a historic villa famous for its stunning gardens and panoramic views of the Amalfi Coast. Built in the 13th century, it blends Moorish and Italian architectural styles. The villa’s terrace offers one of the most iconic vistas in the region, and the gardens are filled with exotic plants and beautiful sculptures. It also hosts the Ravello Festival, with concerts and cultural events throughout the year.

Villa Cimbrone in Ravello is a breathtaking 11th-century villa known for its lush gardens and panoramic views of the Amalfi Coast. The villa features a stunning “Terrace of Infinity,” offering spectacular vistas over the cliffs and the sea. Its serene atmosphere, sculptures, and historical charm make it one of the most beautiful spots on the coast, perfect for a peaceful stroll or a scenic photo opportunity.
